TODD MERRILL STUDIO CONTEMPORARY
October 14, 2009, London – Design authority Todd Merrill is pleased to announce his participation in the Pavilion of Art and Design Fair running October 14-18th in London’s Berkeley Square. Todd Merrill Studio Contemporary will be showcasing new works by furniture designer Joseph Walsh and architect and furniture designer Antonio Pio Saracino. Todd Merrill Studio Contemporary continues to represent high-end furniture that successfully departs from the machine process while focusing on natural materials and cutting-edge 21st century design. Joseph Walsh has garnered international recognition since opening his studio in Co. Cork, Ireland in 1999 and has played a crucial role in advancing the art of one-off, handmade studio furniture. Walsh’s expressive, intelligent, and functional pieces defi ne studio furniture in the 21st century. Todd Merrill will introduce a new collection of Joseph Walsh pieces entitled Layers and Formations, a collection that continues to explore the idea of layering within the natural world and how those layers function as a record of time. As always Walsh strives to deliver a “sensitive use of natural materials” that display “mastery of the woodworking craft”, a mastery that few woodworking studios in the world could undertake given its extraordinary complexity. Antonio Pio Saracino, a young Italian architect and award winning designer living and working in New York City has also garnered his share of international acclaim. Todd Merrill Studio Contemporary will be exhibiting three new pieces by Saracino that explore structural components found in the natural world and the ways in which they can fi nd expression in design. As Saracino demonstrates, humans operate within the natural world and design that functions as a refl ection of nature is innately more connected to the human form. For example the limited edition Molecular Chair with its metal armature and recycled wool upholstery mimics natural structure on a molecular level within the form of a baroque dining chair. Joseph Walsh founded his studio in 1999 in County Cork, Ireland. His experimentation with furniture making began at an early age and he is self taught. He has traveled extensively to workshops of other designers and makers studying and learning. Joseph Walsh’s work has received recognition through its inclusion in Museum, Corporate, Liturgical, and Embassy collections. and is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of |
