June 2, 2009, New York – Design authority Todd Merrill is pleased to introduce Todd Merrill Studio Contemporary, an evolving selection of newly designed original pieces created by some of the most talented designer/craftsmen working in the studio workshop tradition today, including Joseph Walsh, Michael Coffey, Marcus Tremento, and David Ebner. In creating Studio Contemporary, Merrill is recognizing a new era in design, departing from high tech, machine-made works and returning to the great tradition of one-off, handmade studio furniture, but with a very 21st century sensibility.

Studio Contemporary will occupy 600 square feet at 63 Bleecker St., linked to Merrill’s expansive main showroom (Todd Merrill Antiques/20th Century) at 65 Bleecker Street in the Louis Sullivan Building in Manhattan. A virtual gallery at www.studiocontemporary.com. will further showcase Studio prototypes, many of them exclusive to Studio Contemporary, to a world-wide audience. The debut exhibition, scheduled to open June 2, will feature important works by Joseph Walsh highlighted by his stunning Sanagai table, exclusive to Studio Contemporary. Selected new works by other outstanding designers, many produced only for Merrill, will be added in the immediate future and showcased monthly.

Designers will include David N. Ebner, an artist/craftsman recognized for more than three decades by both collectors and curators as a leading integral member of the American studio craft movement;  Joseph Walsh, considered one of the freshest and most innovative of the younger designers in the world today; Marcus Tremonto  who will be designing  exclusive pieces for Studio Contemporary that will show in Fall 2009, Michael Coffey, who, working with Merrill, will be producing new designs, as well as reinterpretations of some of his classic works, to debut in fall 2009.

Studio Contemporary will feature extraordinary workmanship and unique designs, carrying forward the continuum of the 20th century’s studio workshop movement. An emphasis on custom work meeting the specific needs of individual clients with unique design modifications will be a focus of Studio Contemporary.

Each striking piece represents a meeting of superb hand workmanship and design innovation and will appeal to all who appreciate the great tradition studio furniture and cutting edge contemporary furniture design.
