Contemporary Art, Design and Art de Vivre: The Pavilion of Art and Design London

Filed Under (Art, Design & Architecture, Social Trends) by Olivier BassilA few weeks back, as I walked past one of London’s most beautiful squares, Berkeley Square, around the corner from my home, I noticed a magnificent large white pavilion being built, and I had been wondering ever since what this was meant to turn into. The curiosity lasted only one day as I walked into the SQUA.RE office the next day and received a highly attractive pink invitation from Ruinart to the Pavilion of Art and Design London.

With our will to be more and more involved in the art sector, and with our continued passion for design and luxury, this was a must! But this was not a first as the Pavilion already was in London the past two years under the form of a smaller exhibition called DesignArt. The revamped fair is taking its inspiration from its origins: the Pavillon des Arts et du Design Paris which has been held for 13 years in the Jardin des Tuileries. The London fair is purposefully running at the same time as Frieze, encouraging London’s growth as a melting pot for art and design trends.

It was a pleasure to attend the VIP opening yesterday and to run around the pavilion today to run some interviews and give you a sight of the fair (videos coming soon). The fair focuses exclusively on contemporary art and design, with work dating from 1860 to today. In total, as many as 45 exhibitors were there including Hopkins-Custot (Paris), Ben Brown (London), Jacques de la Be´raudie`re (Geneva), Lefe`vre Gallery (London) and Richard Nagy (London). Returning galleries to the fair include Cristina Grajales (New York), R 20th Century (New York), Louisa Guinness, Rove Gallery, Adrian Sassoon, Carpenters Workshop and David Gill, all from London, and the Parisian galleries of Yves Gastou, Galerie Italienne, Chahan Gallery, HP Le Studio, Alain Marcelpoil, Pierre Passebon, Clara Scremini, and Rossella Colombari.

Pieces by the greatest names were in the Pavilion including work by Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Lucio Fontana, René Magritte and Roy Lichtenstein. The Moe¨t Hennessy Prize will sponsor the donation of the winning decorative art piece to the prestigious collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In addition, a judging panel of established figures from the world of art and design have been honouring a few galleries with the titles of ‘Best Exhibit’ and ‘Best Stand’. Designers are producing a range of designed children’s chairs to be sold at the fair with the proceeds donated to the NSPCC, a UK charity for the prevention of cruelty to children.

Exhibiting some of the most coveted works of 20th century art available on the market today, garnering a creative and meticulous selection of exceptional new and established art pieces, and combining vibrant international design scene with the prestigious world of fine art, the Pavilion, a very much Parisian style endeavor in London, truly is destined to become a much needed success today and over the years to come.
